Art of Living
Happy Times at Banana House Wellness Centre
Art of living is an international non-profit, educational, charitable and humanitarian organization offering programs that eliminate stress, create a sense of belongingness, restore human values and encourage people from all religions and cultural traditions to come together. The aim is to live life fully and freely by knowledge of the breath, meditation and service to society.

Banana House offers the basic course of Art of Living and will be a centre for Art of Living activities relating to health, education, sustainable development and conflict resolution. Read More about Art of Living Holidays

Banana Bursury Fund
We support our staff by helping them raising funds for school fees. Everybody who has a child going to secondary school, college or university can apply. Staff pays 1/3, Banana House pays 1/3 and we ask donations from guests to cover the last 1/3.
Please contact us if you would like to support this initiative.

SERG
Banana House is involved in the Shela Environmental Residents Group (SERG), an association in Shela village which facilitates cleaning the village, collecting household garbage and cleaning the beach. SERG is dependant on donations from house owners and visitors.

Flip Flop Project
In Kiwayu, an island north of Lamu, the locals have started a project of collecting used slippers (flip flops) on the beach and making them into all kinds of sea creatures. Banana House sells these beautiful, colorful, fishes, turtles and crabs and helps in this way to create an income for the local community and to improve the environment by recycling the flip flops

Turtle Project, Lamu Marine Conservation project (LaMCop)
Although Banana House is not directly involved in the Turtle project, this is a unique, environmentally friendly project.

LaMCop tags turtles and monitors nests; collects turtle data on nesting, releases and mortality rates, sponsors a bee-keeping project on Manda, tree nursery, school environmental clubs in Shela, and a mobile video unit for public education.

Hands Up for Kids

Hands Up For Kids
Our vision is to give primary schoolchildren the tools to contribute towards ending poverty and sustaining a healthy environment.

We aim to do this through:

  • Ensuring that all primary schoolchildren have access to clean water and sanitation and an environment conducive for holistic growth
  • Provide in-school training courses to help children to cope with stress and restore their natural smiles
  • Provide primary schools with internet connection, to enable them to develop valuable partnerships outside their environment and attain a more global approach
