Enjoying a yoga session

From the distance reaches the sound of the muezzin, the sun just shines above the palm trees, a dhow sailing by, the smell of fresh baked bread in my nose, I start my morning meditation on the roof of our new wellness centre.

In addition to Banana House we have opened a centre in which we organize yoga retreats in Lamu, spiritual courses and holidays, art, dance and writing workshops and Swahili language courses.

The idea of building the wellness centre came from Monika after she felt the need to give something back to the island and its inhabitants, which has been so generous to her since she came to Lamu 10 years ago. Read more about the story

Banana House wellness centre focuses on people from all religions and cultural traditions who are curious, interested and open to experience the beauty of Lamu and are able to learn, share and take responsibility for our world and its environment. Banana House also involves and encourages the local community to participate in workshops and activities in and around the centre and Lamu island.

“As delightful as ever… peace, good food and wonderful but unostentacious service.
It’s brought two very exhausted people back to the living.”

Enjoying a yoga session

The Banana House wellness centre is situated on the ground floor around a large acacia tree; it has a 70m2 cool and elegant hall built in traditional Swahili style with direct access to the garden. Next to the hall is a large bedroom and bathroom which can be used for private treatments or as a guest room. The kitchen provides drinks, lunches and dinners on request. The rooftop of the wellness centre is unique in Shela, a meditation room build out of bottles, views on the sea and Manda Island and beautiful sunsets over the dunes.

The wellness centre is closely connected to Banana House, the private guesthouse of Banana and Monika, where they offer accommodation to those people participating in any of the courses.

The Centre and Banana House are surrounded by a tropical lush garden with bougainvillea, frangipani, hibiscus, palm trees and acacias, and plenty of birds who wake you up in the morning.

We have daily yoga from 7am - 8am and from 5pm - 6pm
